Bollywood's best and top superstar Rajesh Khanna has died at the age of sixty nine.
The actor had been in and out of hospital in recent days. The reason for his health issues was unclear.
Khanna created his name playing the romantic lead in a very string of films that were huge hits within the 1960s and 1970s.
The actor starred in additional than 160 films, together with hits like Kati Patang, Aaradhana, Anand and Amar Prem.
He had a large following and was mobbed by fans whenever he appeared in public.
Khanna died at his family house in Mumbai on Wednesday, 18 July 2012, the Press Trust of India reported. He had been discharged from a hospital in the town on Monday.
Scores of fans gathered outside Aashirwad, his house on Carter Road in Mumbai's Bandra space, following the news of Khanna’s death, the agency said.
"He has gone to a very nice and heavenly place. We have a tendency to be terribly happy that he had gone there," his son-in-law Akshay Kumar (actor) told reporters.
"I hope everyone there, whoever is watching him, will simply say a bit prayer for him," he said.

Meanwhile, tributes are pouring in for the superstar on the micro-blogging web site, Twitter, where fans are remembering his best dialogues and songs from his superhit films.
PM Manmohan Singh led the tributes together with his tweet: "I convey my heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and countless fans and admirers of Rajesh Khanna."
Wrote actor Anupam Kher: "Rajesh Khanna gave us a crash course in Romance. He introduced us to a special twinkle within the eye that created us feel sensible concerning ourselves."
Director Karan Johar tweeted: "The magic... the mannerism... the mania of RAJESH KHANNA is inscribed in each archive of Indian cinema... Forever.... RIP SIR!!!"
Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt wrote: "When we have a tendency to lose a loved one, one thing inside us dies. Our generation loved Rajesh Khanna. Today a bit of us dies with this enigmatic star."
Actress Shabana Azmi tweeted: "He was the SUPERSTAR like no alternative. I did ten films with him. Met him last at Apsara awards. Pale shadows of him however smile as winsome."
Popularly known as "Kaka" by his fans, the actor won a number of business awards throughout his long career, though he was solely recently seen in his 1st TV industrial.
