How To Setup Blogger Custom Domain

So, have you purchased a custom domain for your lovely blog? If yes, then you need to set your DNS (Domain Name System) to add your blog with your new custom domain.
DNS (Domain Name System) settings provided by your hosting company and with it you can control your domain to use.
After setting successfully your blog can be access with your own purchased custom domain. Don’t worry about your traffic, your old blogspot domain name will automatically redirect to your new custom domain name.

Custom DNS settings for blogger blog

If you will buy a custom domain/ top level domain name from blogger blog, you don’t need to setting DNS (Domain Name System), because Blogger will automatically setting your custom domain name for your blogger blog.

But if you will buy a custom domain from a different hosting company or from your local country area then you must need to modify your DNS (Domain Name System) settings. Let’s see how to setup a custom domain name to blogger blog...

Settings for "CNAME Record"

1. Log in to your hosting account with your User ID/ Email and password.

2. Find DNS (Domain Name System) management settings page. This page can be located at your hosting dashboard, tab or dropdown menu. Just find it anyway.

3. Inside your DNS managent page you will find two records name. These are CNAME Records and A-Records. CNAME records connects your blog with your own purchased custom domain name.

4. Click Advance Settings or Manual Settings if you see any link like these.

5. Click CNAME Records or Add CNAME Records. Inside your CNAME Records window type "www" in "Name" box. Then enter ghs.google.com where it asks for "Host Name"

An example for a "CNAME"

Custom Domain CNAME Record Example

Settings for "A Record"

This setting will help you to find your blog when some one type your blog address without "www" Example: shinemat.com. This is called naked domain. This setting will redirect your blog from naked domain to your full domain.
Example: (shinemat.com) » » » (www.shinemat.com)

From my personal experience I can say many visitor don’t type "www" before your web URL(s). So if you don’t set your A-Records for your custom domain you will lose huge amount of traffic because they will see an error notification page. So it’s very important, and don't forget to create A-Records. You need to create 4 A-Records only.

1. Similarly before, find A Records under DNS management page.

2. Inside A Records window type your custom domain name without "www"

3. In "A" section enter the following IP addresses. Remember, 1 IP for 1 A Record. That means 4 A-Records.

216.239.32.21

216.239.34.21

216.239.36.21

216.239.38.21

4. After creating four A-Records you are finished second part.

What Is Custom Domain, Subdomain And How Does Domain Work

After publishing and run your blog long time with free service from Blogger, Wordpress or other platform it is very important to go forward to the next step of your blogging career with a custom domain name/ top level domain. In this post we are going to discuss about definition, types and example about custom domain name. The custom domain name will make your blog more attractive, more professional and easy to remember your blog address.
You should read our previous post about why you should use custom domain name.

What is a Custom Domain Name?

In short, domain name is your blog or website address/ URL. Similarly custom domain name also your blog or website address but it is professional, looks very creative and easy to remember your blog address. The custom domain name looks like something…

www.ShineMat.com

what is custom domain name shinemat.com

The custom domain name can be end with .com .net .org .info etc. Its totally depend on your choice. The .com and .net domain suffix is very popular.

What is a Subdomain?

In brief, subdomain is a part of a prime domain name/ custom domain name. If you start your blog with blogger then you will get your blog address something looks like...

XYZ.blogspot.com

What is subdomain www.shinemat.com

This types of URL or address called subdomain. You can also get your own branded subdomain and professional look Email ID with your own custom domain name if you have a custom domain with a hosting package.
Such as:

blog.XYZ.com (Custom Sub-domain)

services.XYZ.com

contact@XYZ.com (Custom Email ID)

info@XYZ.com

That’s all about Custom and Subdomain. Hope you understand. Now let’s see how a domain works?

How does a Domain work to show a website or a blog?

Whenever visitors type your blog address into a browser it connects your domain name system (DNS) and find your website’s TCP/IP protocol suite where it is hosted. And then it shows into your web browser. Actually, domain name is another face of your IP number.

How DNS works...

Example: Type this IP into your browser 173.194.66.105 and hit Enter, what you are seeing? Google! Yes you are right. Its Google’s IP. The Google converted their site hosted server IP to www.google.com for looking beautiful and of course for remembering easily. The custom domain name is very cheap, only $ 5-10 per year.
There are many types of free blogging platform such as Google’s Blogger, Wordpress, Typepad etc where you can start your blogging career for free. In their free service you will get an unique subdomain name for your blog. Like as:

XYZ.blogspot.com

XYZ.wordpress.com

XYZ.typepad.com

My personal suggestion is, If you are a fresher blogger it is not necessary to do blogging with your own custom domain name for at least 6 to 12 months. First practice, learn something new and update your site, then think about top level domain and hosting.

Note: Our this blog is hosted on Blogger and earlier URL was shinemark.blogspot.com. In 4th March 2012 we successfully shifted to www.ShineMat.com as our custom domain name.

That’s All Friends! Don’t forget to leave your valuable comment.
Have a nice day.
