Google's Fake AI Call Detection Feature. Let's Know All Details

Hey Shiners, have you ever received a call from someone who sounds exactly like your friend or family member, but it turns out to be a scammer? This is becoming more common as criminals use artificial intelligence to clone voices and trick people into sending money or sharing personal information. Google is now rolling out a new Android feature to help stop this.

The feature is called "Fake Call Detection", and it is available globally this month for devices running Android 12 and newer. It will be enabled by default and works automatically when both the caller and the recipient are using the Phone by Google app. Pixel devices are getting it first.

How It Works?

When a contact calls you, their device sends a silent, encrypted confirmation signal to your phone in real time. This signal proves the call is genuine. If that signal is missing, your phone will automatically ping your contact's actual device to double check.

If their real device confirms that it is not making a call, you will receive an on-screen warning telling you to hang up immediately. This happens in real time, before the scammer can convince you to do anything harmful.

According to Google, this new security feature is built on the Rich Communication Services (RCS) open standard. It will only work on Android devices where the Phone by Google, Contacts, and Google Messages (with RCS enabled) apps are installed.

Why This Matters?

Scammers are using two dangerous tactics together. First, they spoof a familiar contact's phone number so it looks like a trusted person is calling. Then, they use AI voice-cloning technology to mimic that person's voice. This combination has already tricked many people around the world.

The numbers are alarming. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that losses from impersonation scams reached $2.95 billion in 2024 alone. INTERPOL's March 2026 Global Financial Fraud Threat Assessment flagged impersonation fraud as a leading threat, contributing to more than $440 billion in global losses last year.

What You Can Do?

Google has stated, "For years, people have relied on caller ID to know who is on the other end of the line, but this is no longer sufficient due to scammers' new tactics."

If your device uses a different calling app, you can install Phone by Google from the Play Store and set it as your default phone app to start receiving this protection.

In December, Google also expanded support for in-call scam protection to multiple banks and financial apps in the United States, including Cash App (57 million users) and the JPMorganChase mobile banking app (over 50 million downloads).
