Bamboo In Construction: Growing Trends In Europe And America

The use of bamboo in construction industries in Europe and America is increasing. Currently, in various countries in Europe and America, items such as household interiors and kitchen utensils are being made using bamboo.

In countries across Asia, including Bangladesh and India, bamboo has been used since ancient times to make various items and structures, including homes. Now, various countries in Europe and America are also attempting to reduce carbon emissions in the manufacturing industry by using bamboo. As bamboo grows rapidly, it accumulates carbon over time. A bamboo grove can save 401 tons of carbon per hectare.

Bamboo Construction Technology for Housing

According to information from the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization in the Netherlands and Delft University of Technology, roping with bamboo in bamboo forests in China can save 237 tons of carbon per hectare. The use of bamboo in construction has a long history in the Asian region. In the past few decades, various countries in Europe and America have been using bamboo to make various items like household interiors and kitchen utensils.

Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on our planet, with some species growing as much as one meter per day. Christopher Mathews, an engineer in the United Kingdom, states that the use of bamboo in building construction in Europe is low, and there is also a lack of awareness. However, the demand for bamboo in various construction frameworks is increasing. In New Mexico, USA, an entire school campus has been constructed using bamboo. In Costa Rica, a large bridge has been constructed with bamboo. If bamboo usage starts in Europe, it will initially be expensive. If bamboo usage increases in Europe, the cost will decrease. Therefore, researchers are exploring the possibility of bamboo cultivation in Europe. The challenge is that various bamboo species do not grow well in the cool climate of Europe.

Researcher Vabna Sharma from the University of Southern California's School of Architecture says that the use of bamboo in construction is still a challenge. In Europe and America, various organizations have already started working on building construction with bamboo. An organization named Dendrocalamus Asper or Giant Clumping Bamboo in the United States has started building with bamboo, importing bamboo from South America and Asia. Now, a trial is underway in Florida, USA, for the experimental cultivation of Dendrocalamus Asper bamboo.
