Electric Cars In Bangladesh: Costs, Benefits & Complete Guide

Electric vehicles are gaining significant popularity in Bangladesh, with many car enthusiasts considering making the switch from traditional fue powered cars. But is investing in an electric car truly worthwhile?

Let's examine the real costs and benefits through the experiences of current owners.

One university teacher who has been using an electric car for 17 months shares that his average daily driving ranges between 20 - 30 kilometers, with monthly electricity costs of only 1,000 - 2,000 taka. This is significantly lower than the 15,000 - 18,000 taka he previously spent monthly on fuel, plus additional maintenance costs for servicing, engine oil, and other parts.

The fuel efficiency of electric cars is remarkable. Calculating at the current residential electricity rate of 14.60 taka per unit, operating an electric car costs only 2 or 3 taka per kilometer, compared to 15 taka or more for petrol vehicles. Additionally, electric cars eliminate regular maintenance expenses associated with engines, gearboxes, and engine oil changes.

When it comes to pricing, electric cars in Bangladesh range from 40 lakh taka to several crore taka, depending on the model and brand. Currently, over 10 brands including BYD, Deepal, MG, BMW, Audi, and Mercedes Benz are available in the Bangladeshi market.

The primary advantages of electric vehicles include significantly lower carbon emissions, reduced noise pollution, and minimal maintenance requirements. According to the Executive Director of Ranks Group, the per kilometer cost of electric vehicles is 60 - 70% lower compared to petrol or octane powered vehicles.

Addressing common concerns about weather conditions, BYD customer service expert Rezwan Rahman confirms that their vehicles can operate in temperatures ranging from -30 to 60 degrees Celsius, and the liquid cooling system protects the battery from water damage.

However, some challenges remain. Electric vehicles face higher advance tax rates, limited charging stations outside Dhaka, and lower resale value. The government is addressing these issues through new policy drafts recommending reduced import duties and registration fees.

Currently, Bangladesh has approximately 40 charging stations, and mostly are  located in Dhaka, but plans are underway to expand charging infrastructure to resorts, restaurants, and hotels outside the capital.
