Venezuela Earthquake | Will The Death Count Rise Further?

On Wednesday, Venezuela was struck by two devastating earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude on the Richter scale, leaving the capital Caracas and the northern coastal region in ruins. So far, at least 920 people have been confirmed dead, and over 50,000 people remain missing.

National Assembly leader Jorge Rodríguez confirmed on Friday that more than 3,360 people have been injured and at least 172 are still trapped under the rubble. The quakes were the strongest to hit Venezuela in over 125 years.

What Is the Latest Situation?


Rescue operations are ongoing. The US Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that the death toll could range from 10,000 to 100,000. La Guaira state, the hardest hit area, has been declared a "Disaster Zone".

On Friday, another 4.9 magnitude earthquake shook the northern coast. Although it caused little damage, it added to the panic.

International Assistance and Rescue Efforts
