Another study, published back in 2014, found strains of E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus living inside unwashed reusable bottles, along with mold species like yellowish Aspergillus and blue green Penicillium.
Maria del Mar Tomás, who heads the Translational and Multidisciplinary Microbiology department at the Biomedical Research Institute of A Coruña in Spain, explains that the most common bacteria found in these bottles are coliforms, the same type of bacteria found in the human gut. In plain language, much of what collects inside an unwashed bottle originally came from fecal matter.
That said, Tomás is clear that people with weakened immune systems, chronic illnesses, or allergy conditions need to be more careful. For them, the buildup of bacteria and mold inside a poorly maintained bottle is a bigger deal, and hygiene should not be treated as optional.
The material of the bottle also matters more than most people realize. Research comparing different bottle types found that glass tends to be the most hygienic option because bacteria have a harder time forming a biofilm on its smooth, non porous surface. Hard and soft plastic bottles, along with metal ones, tend to trap more bacteria over time.
