Today I will define them and discuss the differences and similarities about SEO and SEM so that readers will clarify how both of them work together to do effective online business or promoting.

SEO stands for SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION. In 1997 SEO formula was first used. SEM stands for SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING and you will be surprise to hear that, SEO is one of the part of SEM although SEM was first applied in 2000, after 3 years of applying SEO. Isn’t it surprise able matter?
SEM is a technique for increasing visibility of websites via online advertising in search engines result pages. Google adsense and other Pay Per Click (PPC) ad networks are examples. Advertising on SERP also is a SEM campaign.


SEO versus SEM

SEO is a technique which uses for finding a website whether it is organic or natural search terms while SEM uses for online advertising, promoting through PPC network. When a visitor of a website clicks advertisement on it the owner of the website earn money. SEM has more factors in advertising, marketing and profits and SEO involves only with organic or natural keyword based search term factors. No doubt, without SEO you will never drive traffic in a webpage except paid traffic, where Google hates sending paid traffic in a website. In SEM campaign you should stick always because, sometimes advertising impression is really important.

Differences between SEO and SEM

The main similarity of these two formulas is they both are uses for increasing readership/ visitors and visibility of a website to increase business sales or profits. I will say these are interwoven with each other. To do SEM, SEO will be need, but to do SEO, SEM is not imperative. As I said above, after building a website it must be needed initially SEO before advertising online. Actually, both are essential for a website and both are speak almost similar language.
